What is a very high needs service?

Everyone should have the opportunity to participate and be included in their community. There are so many benefits to connecting with others in shared experiences, such as:

  • Finding a sense of purpose and belonging
  • Developing new skills
  • Meeting new people
  • Creating structure and routine
  • Improving your fitness

Explore can provide a very high needs (VHN) service if you or a loved one were assessed at school as very high needs under the ongoing resourcing scheme (ORS), and you have a disability, a physical or mental health condition, neurodiversity, or you are Deaf or hard of hearing.

Our activities can include support for preparing for work, training, and getting involved in your community. You can choose from group sessions or one-on-one support.

Our team provides this service in the following regions:

  • Auckland
  • Waikato
  • Bay of Plenty

What is the goal of community participation?

Everyone is unique and looking for something different. You decide what works best for you, and our team will support you to create a plan that fits your lifestyle, interests and goals.

We can support you to:

  • Learn everyday life skills
  • Volunteer and give back to your community
  • Take on meaningful roles like student, teacher, teammate, parent or spokesperson
  • Get involved in your culture
  • Gain work experience and learn job skills
  • Explore job opportunities that are right for you
  • Find and maintain paid employment or self-employment
  • Build friendships and social connections

How much does it cost?

Fully funded service*

Our very high needs service is fully funded by the Ministry of Social Development for people who are eligible. This means that you don’t have to pay to use our services, within the limits of your funding.

Privately paid service

Alternatively, if you aren’t eligible for fully funded support, you can pay for our service using your own money. Talk with our team to discuss pricing and support options.

When can I start?

Contact our team to see if we have any funded spots available. If we do have a place that would suit you, you can usually start straight away.

How long does the service last?

You can use our very high needs service for as long as you have funding, or for as long as you choose to, if you’re paying for it yourself. Many people continue using our services for years.

How accessible are your services?

Every disability or health condition is different, that’s why you’ll receive one-on-one support that meets your needs and preferences. No matter what barriers you face, we can work with you to make sure you can access our services.
